Evaluation of nitric oxide level in prepartum heifer mastitis

چکیده
This study was carried out for detection of nitric oxide (NO) levels in healthy (Group 1, n:78) and infected (Group 2, n:63) quarters of pregnant heifers. The mean nitric oxide (NO) concentrations were calculated of about 15,58 ± 2,21 μM/ml and 42,69 ± 6,03 μM/ml for Group 1 and Group 2, respectively. A significant difference was found between two groups, statistically (p<0,001). The mean NO concentrations were compared between quarters infected with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and coagulase negative staphylococcus (CNS) in Group 2 and measured to be; 38,50 ± 8,47 μM/ml and 44,17 ± 7,71 μM/ml, respectively (p>0,05). Additionally, lacteal secretions were classified to be thickened and watery according to viscosity. Intramammarial infection rates (IMI) and NO concentrations were compared in low (watery) and high (thickened) viscosity samples. Risk of IMI was found higher in thickened samples than watery (p<0,001). Every 1 unit (μM/ml) increase in the NO concentration boosted the risk of IMI 1,036-fold (p<0,001).

Mastitis in Heifers: Prevalence, Strategy for Control during the Periparturient Period, and Economic Implications
Intramammary infections in breeding age and pregnant heifers are much higher than previously thought. Many of these infections can persist for long periods of time, are associated with elevated somatic cell counts, and likely impair mammary development during gestation and affect milk production after calving. Prepartum intramammary antibiotic infusion of heifer mammary glands a few weeks befor...
متن کاملPrevalence, Risk Factors, and Strategies for Controlling Mastitis in Heifers During the Periparturient Period
Intramammary infections (IMIs) in unbred and pregnant dairy heifers were once thought to be very infrequent. However, during the last 2 decades, several studies have shown that IMIs in heifers occur frequently during the prepartum and peripartum periods. Many of these infections can persist for long periods of time, may be associated with elevated somatic cell counts (SCC), and may impair mamma...

A total of 183 coagulase negative Staphylococcal infected quarters and 64 uninfected quarters were randomly allotted to 4 experimental groups: infected quarters that did not receive any treatment (positive control group; n = 60); infected quarters that received Tylosin (n = 61) or Cefquinome (n = 62) and also uninfected quarters that did not receive any treatment were considered as negative con...
متن کاملNitric oxide concentrations in mammary quarters during heifer mastitis.
The aim of this study was to evaluate nitric oxide (NOx) concentration in infected and non-infected mammary quarters of dairy heifers before and after calving. The relationship between bacterial species and NOx concentrations, as well as correlation between NOx concentrations and postpartum somatic cell count (SCC), was assessed. Coagulase-negative staphylococci, Staphylococcus aureus and Esche...

The aim of this study was to investigate total antioxidant (TAC), and oxidant capacity (TOC) and nitric oxide (NO) levels in milk of cows with subclinical mastitis. Brown Swiss and Holstein breed cows were screened with California Mastitis Test (CMT) to determine mammary glands with subclinical mastitis. Moreover, somatic cell counts (SCC) were determined electronically in all milk samples. Mam...
